Rarotonga has a surprisingly wide range of accommodation for such a small island, from simple beachfront bungalows and boutique resorts to luxury private villas overlooking the lagoon. Whether you’re travelling on a budget, looking for a relaxed family resort, or planning a luxury escape, there are options across the island.

One interesting thing about the Cook Islands is that land ownership is tightly protected. Almost all land is held under customary ownership by Cook Islands families, and while foreign investors can operate businesses, they must obtain government approval and usually lease land rather than own it outright.
Because of this system, many tourism businesses are locally owned or operated by Cook Islanders, which helps keep tourism closely connected to the community.

When choosing where to stay in Rarotonga, the area of the island can make a big difference to your experience:

• Muri Lagoon (East Coast) – The most popular area for visitors, known for its turquoise lagoon, snorkelling, lagoon cruises, restaurants, and the night markets. This is where many of the island’s best-known resorts are located.

• Sunset Coast (West Coast) – Quieter beaches with beautiful sunsets and several boutique resorts. This side is also closer to the airport and the main town of Avarua.

• South Coast – A little more peaceful and scenic, with beautiful stretches of beach and some smaller luxury resorts.

Because the island is small — only about 32 km around the coast — you’re never far from anywhere, and many travellers choose accommodation based on the style of stay they want, from lively beachfront resorts to quiet romantic escapes.

Te Manava Luxury Villas & Spa

If you're looking for a luxury stay in Rarotonga, Te Manava Luxury Villas & Spa is hard to beat.

Located near the beautiful Muri Lagoon, these private villas offer spacious accommodation with modern design, private plunge pools, and easy access to the beach. The villas feel very private and relaxed while still being close to restaurants, cafés, and activities around Muri.

We stayed in a pool villa just about 10 metres from the beach, which was incredible. The villa had everything you could need for a longer stay — a full kitchen with cooker, a washer, air conditioning, and even a BBQ, along with our own private pool and outdoor space. Being able to step out and walk straight to the beach within seconds made it feel like a perfect island escape.

This was my favourite place we stayed on the island. The villas are beautifully designed and ideal if you want more space and privacy than a traditional resort, while still being close to the lagoon and everything around Muri. It’s a fantastic option for couples, honeymooners, or anyone wanting a more luxurious base while exploring Rarotonga.

Crown Beach Resort & Spa

Crown Beach Resort & Spa is one of the island’s most well-known luxury resorts and offers a more traditional boutique resort experience.

Located on the sunset side of Rarotonga near the airport, the resort sits right on a beautiful stretch of beach and is surrounded by lush tropical gardens. The property is adults-only, which gives it a quieter and more relaxed atmosphere compared to some of the larger resorts on the island.

We actually found a great deal to stay here, and it ended up being a wonderful experience. The people were incredibly lovely and welcoming, and the resort had a really relaxed island feel.

We stayed in a two-bedroom beachfront villa, which was spacious and comfortable, with the beach just steps away. The area around the resort was beautiful, and there’s also a good snorkelling spot right off the beach, which made it easy to jump in the water without needing to go far.

The resort also has great food and restaurants, along with plenty of amenities you’d expect from a full resort, including room service and a lovely pool area. There were even a few friendly resort cats wandering around, which added to the relaxed, tropical atmosphere.

Overall it’s a great option for couples or travellers looking for a comfortable beachfront resort with a peaceful adults-only vibe.

Pacific Resort Rarotonga

Pacific Resort Rarotonga is located directly on Muri Beach, one of the most famous lagoons in the Cook Islands.

It’s the sister property to Te Manava Luxury Villas and Little Polynesian, and we spent several evenings here for dinner during our stay. Even if you're not staying at the resort, it’s a lovely place to visit for a meal or sunset drinks.

The location is fantastic — right in the heart of the Muri area, with easy access to snorkelling, lagoon cruises, cafés, and the night markets. The resort itself sits amongst beautiful tropical gardens with beachfront views over the lagoon.

The property is larger than some of the other resorts on the island, with plenty of rooms and a big pool area, which gives it a more lively and family-friendly feel. There are also useful amenities directly across the road, including a doctor, gift shop, and a convenient car hire office right out the front.

The restaurant and bar were excellent — we had several dinners here and the cocktails were fantastic. It’s definitely somewhere I’d consider staying on a future trip, especially if you want to be right on Muri Lagoon with easy access to everything in the area.

Little Polynesian Resort

For something more intimate, Little Polynesian Resort is one of the island’s most beautiful adults-only boutique resorts.

Located on the quieter south coast of Rarotonga, the resort sits right on a stunning stretch of white sand beach. The property is small and peaceful, with beachfront bungalows and an infinity pool looking out over the lagoon.

It’s a perfect choice for couples or honeymooners looking for a quiet, romantic escape away from the busier parts of the island.
